Some fish are meant for a quiet little aquarium. Hell’s Angel definitely isn’t one of them.
David Groenjes has once again taken a collection of old metal, mechanical parts, hardware, and things most people would have walked right past and turned them into something with a personality all its own. Hell’s Angel is part fish, part machine, and looks like it probably has a few stories it’s not going to tell you.
Measuring 27 inches high and 20 inches long, the sculpture is built entirely from reclaimed steel and salvaged industrial components. Groenjes layers and welds the individual pieces together to create the fish’s body, fins, face, and mechanical details, while still allowing you to recognize bits and pieces of their former lives.
That’s always one of the best parts of David’s work. From across the room, you see a fish. Get closer and suddenly you’re picking out gears, hardware, old machinery, and pieces of steel and wondering how on earth he looked at any of it and thought, fish.
The original rust, worn surfaces, welds, scratches, and natural patinas haven’t been polished away. They’re part of the piece, giving Hell’s Angel the kind of rugged industrial character its name deserves.
There’s humor in it, there’s attitude in it, and there’s an incredible amount of craftsmanship holding the whole thing together. Hell’s Angel isn’t exactly the friendly little fish you bring home in a plastic bag. And that’s precisely why it works.
