Honey Bee is another great example of David Groenjes taking a pile of parts most people wouldn’t look at twice and somehow turning them into something full of life. This one-of-a-kind reclaimed metal bee combines gears, bearings, bolts, springs, mechanical components, and hand-formed steel into a sculpture that is unmistakably a bee—right down to those fantastic wings.

The wings are especially impressive. Delicate steel rods have been shaped and welded into an intricate framework that gives them an almost transparent quality, a great contrast to the heavier industrial components making up the body. The segmented abdomen even gets a splash of yellow, immediately giving the piece that familiar honey bee character.

Look closer and it gets even better. The legs are assembled from small pieces of hardware and mechanical parts, the body is layered with gears and salvaged components, and the antennae finish off a sculpture that somehow manages to feel mechanical and organic at the same time.

That’s what makes David’s work so much fun. From a few feet away, you see a bee. Get closer and you start trying to figure out what everything used to be.
