There’s something about a jackrabbit at full tilt that just makes you smile, and Jump Around captures that perfectly.
David Groenjes has taken a pile of old steel, gears, springs, chain, sprockets, and who-knows-what-else and somehow turned it into a jackrabbit caught right in the middle of a leap. Ears up, legs stretched out, and all four feet off the ground—this guy is going somewhere.
At 29 inches long, Jump Around has a great presence, but it’s the details that really make the piece. Look through the body and you can see all the mechanical bits and pieces working together. Gears form the hindquarters, springs and curved steel give shape to the body, and salvaged hardware becomes everything from the rabbit’s feet to that unmistakable jackrabbit face.
And like all of David’s work, he doesn’t try to hide where the materials came from. The rust, old welds, worn steel, and original patinas are all still there. That history is part of what makes each sculpture completely one of a kind.
Jump Around is clever, beautifully built, and just plain fun. The more you look at it, the more old parts you start picking out—and then you wonder how the hell David looked at any of those pieces and saw a rabbit.
