Quick on his feet and full of attitude, Pronto is David Groenjes’ reclaimed metal take on one of the Southwest’s most recognizable characters—the roadrunner.

Standing 19 inches tall, this one-of-a-kind sculpture captures the bird’s alert stance and unmistakable personality using an ingenious collection of reclaimed steel and salvaged mechanical components. From the long legs and extended tail to the sharp beak and watchful eye, every detail has been thoughtfully engineered from materials that once had an entirely different purpose.

Groenjes uses layered pieces of shaped steel to create the body and wings, while roller chain follows the contours of the neck and head like mechanical plumage. Gears and hardware form the expressive face and crest, and a pop of red tucked behind the eye gives Pronto an unexpected bit of color and character.

The slender legs and individually formed toes are especially impressive, giving the sculpture a light, almost ready-to-run stance despite being constructed from steel. Tall overlapping pieces of reclaimed metal form the signature tail feathers, completing the roadrunner’s distinctive silhouette.

Natural variations in the steel, exposed welds, aged surfaces, and industrial textures remain visible throughout, celebrating the history of the materials rather than hiding it.
